3rd SIAM NATIONAL STUDENT CHAPTER CONFERENCE

The 3rd SIAM National Student Chapter Conference will take place on Wednesday, 28th May 2014 at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford.

The aim of the conference is to bring together undergraduate and graduate students, young researchers, and faculty from a wide range of disciplines sharing a common interest in industrial and applied mathematics. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with one another, share their research/study interests, and make useful contacts from the academic community and industry.

The day consists of two plenary sessions, student talks, and poster presentations. All students who are working in an area related to applied and computational mathematics are encouraged to attend, and travel grants are available. The conference, including coffee and lunch, is free. The day will culminate with a complimentary dinner at a local restaurant. Please note that dinner spaces are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis, and that priority will be given to speakers and poster presenters.

Postgraduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to consider presenting their work in the form of a 20 minute talk (15' talk and 5' Q&As) or poster. Prizes will be awarded for the best student talk and poster.

We are pleased to announce that the plenary speakers for 2014 are Prof Demetrios Papageorgiou (Imperial College London) and Prof Christoph Reisinger (University of Oxford). The welcoming speech will be given by the President of the UKIE SIAM, Prof Endre Süli (University of Oxford).

Applications for talks and poster presentations, travel grants, and general registration for the conference can be made using our online form found HERE.

18th April  : Deadline for abstract submission* **

1st May     : Deadline to register attendance

8th May     : Accepted abstracts for talks/posters announced**

15th May   : Travel grants will be announced

16th May   : Late registration deadline for Oxford students/faculty***

28th May   : Conference

* Note for those submitting an abstract for a talk or poster: Abstracts (no longer than 200 words), talks, and posters should be clearly written, explaining the importance of the research topic (Which gap of today‘s research does it contribute to? Why is it innovative?). A collective document of all accepted abstracts will be prepared in advance of the conference and will be made available to the participants.

** Extended deadline. Please note that due to time restrictions of the Conference we may require that you present your work in the form of a poster instead of a talk as a result of high demand.

Directions 

The Conference will be hosted in the newly established building of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford. It was formally opened on 3rd October 2013. Detailed instructions and maps can be found here.

Financial Support

There is limited funding available for travel grants, and applications for travel grants can be made using the registration form. We do ask that you provide an itemized list of your expenses and estimated costs. There might also be limited funding available for accommodation. Priority will be given to speakers and poster presenters.

Delegates who need financial support to attend the conference, but are not offered a grant from us, are advised to look for funding from their own institutions or other sources. We do, however, hope to be able to provide at least partial financial support to all attendees.

For claiming your travel/accommodation fund, please visit the registration desk during the mid-morning and afternoon coffee breaks and bring a copy of your receipts and your bank details with you. You can contact our treasurer, Philippe, at charmoy@maths.ox.ac.uk who will be happy to answer any inquiries and sort out the payments via online transaction.
